Integrating Marine and Cultural Conservation for Ecosystem Connectivity in Gökova Bay and Datça/Bozburun Peninsulas
Objective
Ensure sustainable and coordinated management of the Gökova and Datça-Bozburun marine areas by protecting biodiversity and reducing the impact of invasive species.
Context and Challenges
The Datça-Bozburun Peninsula hosts remarkable biodiversity but is highly threatened by invasive species, overexploitation of resources, and climate pressures. Despite an existing legal framework, public resources remain limited. MCS works to professionalise management, engage local communities, and ensure the long-term preservation of this fragile ecosystem.
Why It matters
Protecting these unique Mediterranean habitats is essential to maintain biodiversity, secure local fishery resources, and strengthen resilience to climate change. The active involvement of fishers ensures the effectiveness and sustainability of the model.
Areas of Actions
- Establishment of a monitoring and management system for the marine protected area in collaboration with authorities and fishers.
- Scientific monitoring of species, biomass, and climate impacts, with data shared with institutions.
- Awareness-raising and promotion of the consumption of invasive species to relieve pressure on native species and support the local economy.
Mediterranean Conservation Society (MCS-AKD)
Founded in 2012, the Mediterranean Conservation Society works to protect Mediterranean ecosystems by combining science, community-based management, and support for local livelihoods. Recognized for its impact in Turkey, it collaborates closely with fishers, universities, and public authorities to develop exemplary models of marine protected areas.
