Beyond Plastic Med Association (BeMed)

Objective

Reduce plastic pollution in the Mediterranean by limiting plastic use, improving waste management, and supporting replicable local solutions.

Context and Challenges

The Mediterranean is one of the most plastic-polluted seas in the world. Waste leakage—linked in particular to tourism and inadequate waste management—threatens marine ecosystems. The BeMed+ project aims to develop concrete local solutions and promote their dissemination at the regional level.

Why It Matters

Plastic pollution causes long-lasting damage to marine ecosystems and affects local economies. By acting locally while encouraging the sharing of solutions, the project contributes to collective impact across the Mediterranean region.

Areas of Action

• Reduce plastic leakage into the sea in the Monastir pilot region through coordinated action plans
• Provide financial support to local micro-initiatives across the Mediterranean
• Facilitate a community of practice to share knowledge and replicate solutions

Beyond Plastic Med Association (BeMed)

Founded in 2019, the BeMed association brings together a network of 72 Mediterranean NGOs and relies on an independent scientific committee. It funds and supports initiatives to combat plastic pollution, prioritizing a bottom-up approach that connects local action, knowledge sharing, and advocacy at the regional level.
